Matters of record

Cases that changed Hong Kong law.

Our firm opened in 2019. These are some of the matters we have acted in since — each one began with a person and a problem the existing rules did not answer well. We describe them by their published case names only.

2020

ZN v Secretary for Justice

(2020) 23 HKCFAR 15; [2019] HKCFA 53

Court of Final Appeal. Established the framework for protecting people from forced labour and human trafficking under Article 4 of the Bill of Rights, setting out what the authorities must do to give that protection effect.

2023

NF v R

[2023] HKCFI 2233

Recognised, for the first time in Hong Kong, a person as a child's parent at common law — opening a route to legal parenthood for families the statute had not provided for.

2023

RM v AY

[2023] HKFC 59

Hong Kong's first decree of nullity granted on the ground of a forced marriage, giving survivors of coerced marriage a clear legal way to have it set aside.

2023

Q & Tse v Commissioner of Registration

(2023) 26 HKCFAR 25

Court of Final Appeal. Established that transgender people can have the sex marker on their Hong Kong identity card recognised without undergoing full sex-reassignment surgery. Our partner Wong Hiu-Chong worked on this case.

2025

Re Ha Che Wai

[2026] 1 HKC 285; [2025] HKCFI 5681

Court of First Instance. Established that hospitals owe a duty to make sure a conditionally discharged mental-health patient understands their right to ask the Mental Health Review Tribunal to review or lift their conditions.

2025

CB v Commissioner of Police

(2025) 28 HKCFAR 306; [2025] HKCFA 10

Court of Final Appeal. Continued the Court's trafficking and forced-labour line, further clarifying the duties the authorities owe to potential victims.

2025

K v Secretary for Justice

[2026] 1 HKLRD 517; [2025] HKCFI 1974

Court of First Instance. Found that excluding a parent in a reciprocal-IVF family from legal parenthood was unconstitutional, so that these families can be recognised in law as the families they are.
