Rainbow families making progress in quest for rights

SCMP’s feature article discussed a case handled by our partner Evelyn Tsao and the general landscape surrounding LGBT rights.

The feature, published in October 2021, looked at how far Hong Kong law has moved for the city’s rainbow families. At its centre was the May 2021 High Court decision recognising two separating mothers each as guardians of their children — the matter we wrote about in Guardianship & Custody: a milestone in co-parenting for same-sex partners. The piece set that decision alongside the wider run of equality cases of recent years, and asked what the wins, and the setbacks, mean for families in Hong Kong.
